Are you curious to see which friends you share with another user on Facebook?
Mutual friends are users that both you and another person are connected with on the platform. They create links within your online community.
Whenever you visit someone’s profile — whether you’re already friends or not — you will often see the number of mutual friends displayed in their friend data. This can be a reliable way to determine whether you know the person in real life, especially if they’ve sent you a friend request and you don’t recognize them.
With that in mind, how can you view a list showing only the mutual friends you share with another user? And how does this process differ once you’re friends?
Viewing Mutual Friends with a Non-Friend User
When browsing your Friend Suggestions list, the Suggested Friends carousel on your main feed, or the profile of someone who regularly appears in your friends’ comment sections, you’ll likely see a mutual friends count displayed under their name and picture.
This count is typically accompanied by small profile images of those mutual friends. If you visit the person’s profile, you can click the mutual friends count at the top of their page to open a full-screen list of mutual friends.
This is the quickest way to identify shared connections and see who you both know.
Viewing Mutual Friends with a Current Facebook Friend
To view mutual friends shared with someone who is already on your friends list, go to their profile and open their Friends list. From there, select the “Mutual” tab at the top to filter and display only the friends you have in common.
Another option is to access your Friendship page. To do this, click the three dots icon (•••) on their profile and select “See Friendship” from the menu that appears.
The Friendship page gives you a full overview of your relationship with that person, including:
- A complete list of mutual friends
- The date you became friends on Facebook
- Shared photos and memories
- Additional shared content
Why Mutual Friends Matter on Facebook
You may wonder why the mutual friends feature is so prominent on Facebook.
Not only does it help create user connections and build communities, but mutual friends data also allows Facebook to recommend content based on your shared interests with others in your network.
In essence, it’s another way Facebook delivers a more connected and personalized experience for every user.
It also serves as a fascinating insight into your social circle — revealing which of your friends are highly connected, and which ones prefer to stay under the radar.
We hope this helps!
